He was a pilot for 29 years.
On the day of the 3 April 1881 census
his wife, Sarah, age 32, whose occupation was listed as
Mariner's wife was living at
11 Commercial Road, West Teignmmoth, Devon
with children John H., age 8, William E., age 6, Frederick G., age 4,
Herbert W., age 2 and Laurence 10 months.
John who would have been 31 was not shown on the census.

In the 1891 census he was 42 living at
11a Commercial St with wife Sarah 43
and children William 16, errand boy, Frederick 14, errand boy,
Herbert 12, scholar, Laurence 10, scholar, Amy 8, scholar and Reginald 4.
In the 1901 census he was 57 (pilot, seas) still living at
16 Somerset Place with wife Sarah 52
and children Amy Kate 18, Reginald E 13, apprentice barber and Percy C 9, scholar.
