On the 3 April 1881 census John Harry was 8 and living at
11 Commercial Road, West Teignmouth, Devon
with his mother, Sarah, age 32
and brothers William E., age 6,  Frederick G., age 4,   Herbert W., age 2 and  Laurence 10 months.
His father John who was a mariner would have been 31 and was not at this address on the day of the census.

At the same address were Thomas and Elizabeth Holland, husband and wife, comedian and comedienne.

10 years later on the 1891 census John was 17, a plumber, living at
9 Sun Lane, West Teignmouth, Devon
with his grandmother, Mary A Churchill, age 72, occupation dyer
and cousin Edwin G Churchill, age 21, occupation servant.
