Herbert W was 2 and living at
11 Commercial Road, West Teignmouth, Devon
with his mother, Sarah, age 32
and brothers John H., age 8, William E., age 6, Frederick G., age 4,
Laurence 10 months.
His father John who was a mariner would have been 31 and
was not at this address on the day of the census.
At the same address were Thomas and Elizabeth Holland,
husband and wife, comedian and comedienne.

In the 1891 census he was 12 living at 11a Commercial St
with parents John 42 and Sarah 43
and siblings William 16, errand boy, Frederick 14, errand boy,
Laurence 10, scholar, Amy 8, scholar and Reginald 4.
From 1898 to 1910 he was a plumber with the Royal Navy.
According to the Royal Navy he was born 29 Feb 1880 in West Teignmouth, Devon,
joined up for 12 yrs, dark hair, brown eyes, 5'1" but later in same year 5'2"?
V G record up to 1910, after which no further entries.
He was not on 1901 census, perhaps he was at sea?
In 1910, he emigrated to USA. On 21 September 1910 at age 32 he married his cousin Florence Hutchings, 31.
Both first marriages, gave parents' names as John H Whiteway and Sarah Churchill
and William Hutchings and Jessie E Churchill respectively.
He was born in West Teignmouth and a plumber; she was born in Shaldon and was a shoe stitcher.
In the 6 January 1920 census he was 40 living at
24 Boylston Street, Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachussetts with
his wife Florence, age 39, mother-in-law Jessie Golby,

Jessie Churchill) age 68.
He was a renter, had immigrated in 1910, naturalised 1917, Assembler, Machine Shop, Wage worker
In the 10 April 1930 census he was 51 living at
26 Lawrence St, Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachussetts with wife Florence, age 50.
He was a renter, age 32 at first marriage, had not attended school since 1 Sept 1929,
can read and write, year of immigration 1910, naturalised, speaks English, machinist, wage worker,
not a veteran of US military or naval forces
Died 4 April 1962 of sudden chronic thrombosis at age 83.
He had lived in Masonic Home for 11yrs 11 months (informant was Mark Ball of the home).
Son of John Whiteway and Sarah Churchill.
