Richard Chamberlin and Kate Whiteway were married at this South Hackney church September 26, 1900   (Wedding Photo).   Their first home and scene of the wedding reception was at 2 Penshurst Road, Hackney.

St John's was built in 1848 and can hold 1500 people.   The walls are Kentish stone faced with Speldhurst stone.   The original stone spire was damaged during the 2nd world war and replaced by the current copper clad wooden structure.   Its nave is 60 feet in height and the spire 187 feet.
