William was born in the couple of years that are missing from the Shaldon baptism register.   He would fit in as John Whiteway and Grace Wood's 4th child or John Whiteway's brother William's first child.

29 Dec 1831 Captain William Whiteway, of the brig Commerce, and a companion drowned when sailing to Port de Grave, Newfoundland from Brigus, Newfoundland in a small boat.

We have not established whether if it is this William Whiteway who would have been about 60 or his son William who would have been 33 who drowned.
